Do you have or know of a good primer on The Matrix protocol, Element client usage, key management etc? From what I read it sounds sort of similar to Mastadon, but probably more focused on security and if I understand correctly, persistence of messages or conversations? I just tried it out a day ago as you saw when I joined the daily beagle room but still don't have a good grasp yet. I haven't done the private keys backed up process and have tried both the desktop browser interface and the Android client and had to go through some rigamarole to get both to sync. It's still not fully syncing it seems. Also still trying to understand how the top level homeserver, Matrix.org and different servers people can setup and room and messages/threads work...
Element isn't perfect, and in terms of encryption it is a bit difficult (it prefers to not decrypt messages when the service 'isn't sure'). So if you lose your main security passphrase, you can reset it, but you will lose access to all prior messages.
That said, I use it because Element isn't (currently) pro-censorship, rather than the elegance of their UI. It's the closest drop-in for Discord or, say, Skype.
It will probably be a lot easier if I make the public Daily Beagle chatroom unencrypted, but that would mean making a new one. I may do that in future.
Ok that probably explains why on the mobile client I can see half the messages, but then it states it's waiting for the other ones. I with you on the censorship issue and Mastadon's stance with global blacklists really turned me off.
But with recent news about digital IDs, age verification, including now for social media, it makes me wonder how services like Discord, or more decentralized ones like Matrix / Element and even forum boards--anything that allows user generated content-- heck even Substack, would be affected. Or if maybe those laws currently limit scope by number of users for example
Have you thought about setting up a ko-fi account? Or paypal, donorbiox, or other methods for one time payments? I see some other authors do this on their Substack.
However, those who have money will likely have already become paying subscribers. This is currently quite a small Substack (~430) so the pool is limited.
The 'for hire' portion is aimed at a different category of people, those who have money but can only spend it on a specific thing, or those more business minded who see a skill that they can financially benefit from and are willing to pay for (a sort of specialist 'gig economy').
My hope is offering an exchange will incentivise payments and result in a higher paid stream of income during an economic downturn.
