Siemens finally granted the transport documents for the repaired Siemens gas turbine used in Nord Stream 1 to pipe gas from Russia to Germany, however this is just the documents, not the turbine itself. As one of our earlier articles quipped:
Don’t hold your breath on Canada delivering the gas turbine to Russia on time.
Vladimir Putin made clear if the turbine didn’t arrive in time, gas output would be reduced to 20% (emphasis added):
Don't forget as well that Putin has suggested that if the turbine is not back early this week, then gas flow may fall to 20% capacity even though originally, this turbine wasn't expected to be needed until September."
Despite this, misleading media outlets pretended to act surprised when it happened, with Australian ABC News owned ZeroHedge (the same source as above) breathlessly reporting (emphasis added):
Putin Turns The Screws: Gazprom Unexpectedly Halts Another Nord Stream Turbine Cutting Flows In Half; European Gas Prices Soar
There was nothing “unexpected” about it. It had already been announced in advance if the turbine does not arrive it’d be reduced to 20%. It was already reduced to 40% earlier this month.
Russian government funded outlet Intel Slava Z have stated, contrary to the ZeroHedge article, that the reduction (not ‘halting’) of the gas will occur on July 27th, giving the specific metric of a drop to 33 million cubic meters out of 167 million cubic meters, or 19.7% of total flow rate.
Assuming the trend continue, then we could see the gas flows stop entirely, which was curiously and suspiciously pre-empted by articles declaring Gazprom had already declared ‘force majeure’ and was going to halt all gas flows.
Media jumping ahead of the script in terms of what is about to happen?
